WHAT IS HOME HEMODIALYSIS
Dialysis on your terms
Home hemodialysis (home HD) works exactly the same way as in-center treatment: a dialysis machine filters waste, excess fluid, and toxins from your blood and returns the cleaned blood to your body. The difference is that you do it at home, on a schedule that works for your life, after completing a thorough training program with our home therapy team. Many patients find that home HD gives them more energy, more flexibility, and a stronger sense of control over their care.
Flexible scheduling
Treat more frequently and for shorter sessions, or on the days that fit your life. No fixed facility schedule to work around.
Potentially better outcomes
More frequent, gentler treatments can mean better fluid control, improved blood pressure, and more energy between sessions.
Treat in your own space
No travel to a clinic three times a week. Dialyze from your home, on your couch, in your own environment.
Family can be involved
A care partner can train alongside you. Many families find that home HD brings them closer and gives everyone more peace of mind.
GETTING STARTED
The training process
Home HD training program | Completed at our facility with your home therapy team
01
Evaluation and candidacy review

02
Classroom and skills training
You and your care partner learn about the machine, supplies, access care, and what to watch for. We go at your pace, with no rush.
03
Supervised training treatments
Under our supervision, you begin performing treatments at our facility while building confidence and skills.
04
Supervised home treatments
Before you dialyze fully independently, our team observes and supports your first treatments at home to make sure you feel confident and safe. | With home therapy nurse present.
05
Independent home dialysis begins
Once you and your care team are confident, you transition to full independence at home. Monthly clinic visits and ongoing remote support continue throughout. | Ongoing team support continues.
IS IT RIGHT FOR YOU
Who is a good candidate for home HD
Good candidates typically:
- Are motivated and willing to learn the process
- Have a supportive care partner at home
- Have a stable home environment with adequate space
- Want more scheduling flexibility than in-center allows
- Are able to manage their access site with guidance
May need further evaluation:
- No available care partner at home
- Housing instability or limited space for equipment
- Certain complex medical conditions
- Significant vision, dexterity, or cognitive limitations
- Preference for supervised in-clinic care
Not sure if home HD is right for you? That is a conversation worth having with your care team. Many patients are surprised to find they are good candidates. We will walk through the options honestly at your evaluation, with no pressure in any direction.

FAQ
A care partner is strongly recommended for most patients starting home HD. They do not need any medical experience, just willingness to learn alongside you. Our team trains both of you together. In some situations, solo home HD may be possible. Talk to your care team about your specific situation.
Training typically takes several weeks, depending on how quickly you and your care partner feel comfortable. We go at your pace. There is no deadline to rush through it. The goal is confidence, not speed.
Yes, when done with proper training and support. Our team prepares you thoroughly and makes sure you know what to watch for and when to call for help. The machine also has built-in safety alerts and alarms.
That can always happen. Life changes, health changes, and caregiving situations change. If home HD is no longer working for you, we transition you back to in-center care without disruption. You are not locked into anything.
Yes, with advance planning. Some patients travel with their equipment. Others arrange guest treatments at in-center facilities near their destination. Talk to your home therapy nurse well before any planned trip.
Medicare covers home hemodialysis, including the machine, supplies, and training. Medicaid and most commercial plans also provide coverage, though details vary. Our team verifies your coverage before you start and helps navigate any questions.
